The Lord Jesus Christ is giving His disciples an even more important message and assuring them: I will not leave you as orphans. I will come and dwell with you through the Holy Spirit, and I will fellowship with you.
We read in John 16:13: "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come."
Here the Lord Jesus Christ is saying three main things: when the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you, He will give you a message, and He will reveal to you what is to come regarding your future. So this Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit, is a good guide.
The Holy Spirit: Our Comforter and Guide
We have already seen what Comforter means—He is a counselor, a helper. He is our advisor, He is our helper. Here the Lord Jesus Christ is telling us that in this darkened life, in this world, we need a guide to walk in light. Just as when we visit a historical place, a guide is there who explains that place well—how it was established, who built it, what its purpose was. In the same way, in this world, the Holy Spirit comes from God and becomes our guide.
To be a guide means that He leads us on the path of truth. How can we walk in truth while avoiding falsehood? The Holy Spirit helps us. Without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing, but through the Holy Spirit we can do everything. And the meaning of everything is that we can walk in truth, because this guide, this Holy Spirit, is the Spirit of truth. Jesus Christ is saying that He will help you so that you can walk in the life of truth and reveal truth, who is Jesus Christ.
The Holy Spirit: God's Messenger
The second thing—how will this Spirit of truth, this guide, help us? He will give us a message. The meaning of message is: what does our God the Father, whose children we have become, want from our lives? Ephesians 2:10 says, "We are all the workmanship of God. He created us as a new creation in Christ Jesus so that we may do His good works."
So how do we do those works, those purposes? We need a message, we need to communicate with God. So what does the Holy Spirit do? As a guide, the Holy Spirit brings all of God's words, the mind of God, to us, to a believer, and gives him a message. He tells him what he needs to do.
The Holy Spirit will not speak on His own. This means that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit work in unity. Whatever is the mind of God and the mind of Christ—the mind of God, the mind of Christ—the Holy Spirit will reveal everything in a believer's life. This Holy Spirit who is the guide, He will not speak on His own, but whatever the Holy Spirit hears from God the Father, that is what He will tell a believer.
God wants to save you, He loves you, and He has placed you on this earth with a special purpose. God has a purpose. Jesus Christ says that the Holy Spirit will hear the words of God and He will tell you, He will guide you, and He will fulfill the works of Jesus Christ in our lives.
The Holy Spirit: Revealer of What Is to Come
And finally, this Holy Spirit declares in the life of every believer, every person who becomes a new creation in Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is encouraging His disciples, giving them courage, giving peace to their sorrowful hearts, by telling them that this Holy Spirit who is the Spirit of truth will be a good guide for you in your life who will lead you to truth.
He will bring the message of God, the words of God, to you. He will not speak on His own, but He will be able to tell you only those things which He hears. And the third thing is that He will reveal to you those things which are yet to happen in your life, that good future. He will tell you, like a good guide.
The Lord Jesus Christ has strengthened the hearts of His disciples in John chapters 14, 15, and 16 by telling many things about the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Glorifies Christ
John 16:14 says: "He will honor and glorify Me, because He will take of and receive what is mine and will reveal and declare and disclose and transmit it to you."
Now Jesus Christ is saying that the guide who will come, the Holy Spirit who will come, will not seek His own glory. The Holy Spirit does not need to be glorified—He is God. But this Holy Spirit will glorify Jesus Christ. Glory means to bring the presence of God—glory, the presence of God. When we exalt Jesus Christ in our lives, the presence of God also increases in our lives.
How will He glorify Christ Jesus? By performing the works of Christ through your life. He will not seek His own glory, He will not say that I am the Holy Spirit, give glory to Me, give honor to Me—we will do that of course. But what will He do? Jesus Christ says that He will glorify Me, because He will take from My words and tell you.
The Holy Spirit: The Author of Scripture
The Holy Spirit is in truth the author of the Bible. All things that happened regarding Christ and in the life of Christ, the Holy Spirit knows all of those things. The Holy Spirit confirms the Word of God. Without the Holy Spirit, we cannot understand the Word, we cannot receive its revelation. The Holy Spirit speaks of the words of Jesus Christ, He reveals the glory of Jesus Christ.
He says that He will take from My words and tell you. All the works that Christ has determined from the beginning, before the creation of the world—who will reveal all those things? The Holy Spirit will. This Holy Spirit is a deeply loving God. The Holy Spirit knows everything. The Holy Spirit knows your condition, the Holy Spirit knows the condition of your family. This Holy Spirit will reveal the glory of Jesus Christ in your life.
1 John 3:8 says: "The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil." When the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ is revealed in our lives, the evils of this world, the works of the devil, are destroyed.
Spiritual Reflection
John 16:15 says: "Everything the Father has is mine. That is why I have said that He will take what is mine and will make it known to you." Everything the Father has is mine. He said that the Spirit will take the things that are mine and will reveal and declare and disclose and transmit them to you.
Whatever the Holy Spirit needs for you, He will say only what the Lord Jesus Christ has said. Every word of the Lord Jesus Christ that was spoken on this earth is firm, is established on this earth, and all those words today are established in heaven. The Holy Spirit knows the full depth of all that Christ has spoken and given. Nothing is hidden from Him—He who is God knows all things.
Practical Application
And when this Holy Spirit makes the words of Jesus Christ firm in our lives, the impossible becomes possible for us. The Holy Spirit does not work apart from Christ. He takes what belongs to Christ and makes it real in our daily lives. He glorifies Christ not by drawing attention to Himself, but by making the words and works of Christ alive and powerful in us. When we surrender to this work of the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to guide us, to deliver God's message to us, and to reveal God's purpose for our lives, we find that the same Christ who walked this earth, who conquered death, lives and works in and through us today.
